What went wrong at South Shields School, which inspectors have branded ‘inadequate’?

Pupils’ futures were affected by poor GCSE grades at a school ordered to improve by Ofsted inspectors.

South Shields school has plunged from ‘good’ at its last inspection, to ‘inadequate’ – the worst possible rating inspectors can hand out.

It’s just 10 years since the 553-pupil school was created by the merger of King George V and Brinkburn secondary schools. It moved into a £23m state-of-the-art new building in 2011.

But since then “considerable turbulence” in senior leadership has brought about a drop in standards.

Exam results were the biggest cause for concern: in 2016 “very few” pupils got the GCSE grades they were capable of, especially in vital subjects maths and English. This, the report said, limited what they could go on to do after the age of 16.

  • What happens when a school is rated ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted? Here’s what parents need to know

Pupils classed as disadvantaged did especially badly in almost all subjects, inspectors said.

The quality of teaching has been variable – though some lessons are clear and thorough, in others, teachers don’t pick up on misconceptions among pupils quickly enough.

Pupils don’t get regular enough homework, which has worried some parents.

However, a new, permanent head is now in place, and inspectors believe that “leaders have the capacity to further improve the school”. Many of the criticisms noted in the report have already been identified, and staff are starting to work on them.

Changes to the length of the school day, a “firmer behaviour policy” and higher expectations have made a difference.

Inspectors noted that pupils are “well behaved, and treat each other with respect”.

Recently, expectations have been raised and the monitoring of pupils’ achievement is now “thorough and well-focused”.

And school leaders insist things will continue to get better.

Headteacher Allie Denholm said: “Over the past two years South Shields School has seen an immense period of change, which I am delighted to say inspectors have recognised as having an impact on the quality of teaching and learning for all ages and abilities.

“Firm foundations are now in place which I am determined they will lead to a relentless climb in fortunes to provide the very best learning environment for students.”

She added: “The inspectors’ report is fair and thorough. It recognises the work done so far and the areas we are striving to improve.

“I love this school, am proud to be its Headteacher and I have enormous faith in its ability to become the very best possible environment for students to learn.”
